PERSONALITY
“You know, I met you just five minutes ago, and I already love you.”
She wears her emotions on a sleeve. If she is happy, she will laugh like a madwoman and hug people she is with. If she is frustrated, she will scream her lungs out and throw a kilometer-long string of obscenities in spanish. If she is sad, she will drink until she can’t. Containing emotions is more to save face and friendships, but the moment she’s allowed to set her emotions loose, she will.
This also becomes a love to listen and learn from others. Samuel, being a journalist friend of hers, made Adela respect the profession due to him risking life and limb in the same line of fire. Her father and all members of her family that became military inspired her to follow their footsteps and fight for good, even if no longer under the law. It even had her believe in magic, due to her own mother being a
bruja
, making her open to the belief in the supernatural.
Adela is honest, perhaps to a fault. If she does not like someone, she will be vocal about it and throw him every insult under the sun. Just as well, she is also likely to turn back moments later to hug the person and wish him the absolute best.
This, however, comes to the point of being irreverent. Said vocalization of her own thoughts and emotions comes with being
really
inappropriate, which is not honesty and becomes leaking unfiltered thoughts.
“I will die a slave of principles, not tycoons or aliens.”
Adela’s family have always been one of principles. Ever since Adela was old enough to understand the stories of her great-grandparents, she was always taught the importance of serving your family and your community for good, and that sometimes law must be broken for the good of the many. And in a galaxy where the rich and powerful make the rules, that ‘sometimes’ has turned into ‘all the time’.
Even before her revolution, Adel had always strived to save as many people as possible, and has always been a frontline commander for the sake of her men, even at the face of insormountable odds. With her father and maternal grandmother having served in the Aztlán military in order to keep her family from the hold of the
Hacendados
, Adela likewise joined in order to continue protecting them. However, whereas her elders believed in the systems to protect people, Adela’s time was one of corruption and distrust of the powerful.
While military outside of the Core Worlds of Aztlán was lacking, the importance of protecting them was heightened when faced by the more expensive starships and suits of armor of the Tycoons of the
Hacendados
. With an understaffed and undermanned military, Adela became used to the tactic of foraging and scavenging from the more powerful enemies – to then share with the poor and the people that absolutely need it.
The reason is, to serve your people and yourself is to be free; whereas to serve the powerful is to live as a slave.
“The President’s Chair is cursed! Anyone that sits on it becomes evil!”
Adela’s fight for the revolution was marred by the realization that those that sought to end the regime were bound to become just as evil as the people they overthrew. Couple that with the fact she had to send young people to their deaths, Adela has been haunted by the guilt of having been responsible for it. Because of it, and even in spite of having been in the military for enough years to become a Second Captain, she developed a disdain, and even fear, towards structures of power, to the point of preferring leadership by concensus and agreement over a person ruling over everyone. She believes that, either a man grows remorseful because of all the evil things he has to do in order to do what is necessary… or he becomes power-hungry, and a monster.
And yet, right with the end of the regime of the
Haciendados
, she realizes that those
with
leaders still end up more organized, whenever they be by organization or clear obedience. With her freedom movement having stalled, and gradually shrunk, a part of her wonders, with fear, whenever if
she
would have to take leadership in order to save her people.
Said relationship between power and responsibility is there where Adela notes three uncomfortable truths she’s seen in her galaxy, that does not know how to solve: Everyone looks out for themselves, the top is often the place that is easiest to change things, and when you have power, power inevitably has
you
.
After all she’s seen in her world, she is wondering if the only way to save her galaxy would be to risk it all, and let power corrupt her.
SUPERBIA might sometimes operate on logic beyond that of inferior organic minds, but its judgement is never wrong.
WHAT MAKES SUPERBIA THINK YOUR CHARACTER IS PRIVATEER MATERIAL? (Powerful martial abilities? Sheer ambitious vision? An ability to make a mean egg salad sandwich?)
She is
resourceful
. In a world where a lot of powers are excluded to the rich, the powerful, and the alien, she has learned to improvise, even with the elements that may require a lot of knowledge. She knows how to repair ship plating and even Alcubierre Drives, even if it requires bending them or even using duck tape. She knows how to cook, even if it’s traditional dishes or using ingredients at hand. She knows how to fight, even if it is with a lack of equipment. Someone that can serve as a back-up to any role, especially while in space, is something that one can never spare.
Fortuna is always described as being capable of granting any wish, but its exact nature is unknown.
DEEP DOWN, WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER WANT IT TO BE THE MOST? (examples: an impossibly powerful weapon, a beautiful natural wonder, a cool giant robot.)
Her greatest hope, something that is not only the holy grail of physics, but would also mean there is no more need for warfare and would secure a safe and prosperous humanity, is something that could
Reverse Entropy
. In essence, something that could be able to not only restart a sun after it dies out, or even restore or accelerate a planet into terraformation. It could create anything out of nothing.
The reason for this is, the Citizen Federation that exiled her peoples generations ago was one with the philosophy that all resources are limited, and therefore everyone has to fight for them. With said idea being part of the philosophies used by the Junta that took over Earth’s government, her people got the raw end of that deal, and ultimately escaped to another sector for a better life… all to face not only corruption, politicians, and tycoons once again abusing the man below; but even alien threats of the infinite arthropod threat ‘Tzizimime’, or the godlike and fanatic Pillar Empire.
Reverse Entropy, to Adela, would mean a post-scarcity society. One where no one has to ever fight for limited resources, worlds, or energy; and can instead easily make new ones.
Should it ‘merely’ be a replicator, so not unlike that of Star Trek, it would still mean the end of centralized power, and the beginning of a post-scarcity society, where true collaboration is necessary and even possible, and where the aliens would no longer find humanity easy prey.
SUPERBIA only desires to prove the existence of the Lucky Star; its privateers are free to do whatever they want with it.
IF YOUR CHARACTER GOT THE TREASURE, WHAT WOULD YOUR CHARACTER DO WITH IT? WHY DO THEY WANT TO FIND IT?
At the moment, Adela is seeking for it as a desperate measure. She knows it may be something great enough to not only change the course of a war, but even change the galaxy as they know it. And change, Adela knows, is what is desperately needed.
If it an artifact that can replicate absolutely anything, create matter from nothing, or even reshape an entire reality, Adela would use it to make her galaxy a prosperous one, where war is no longer necessary, where the Citizen Federation no longer exists and is instead an idealistic foundation with post-scarcity society that treats her people as equals, and where every man and woman has the right to their own destiny without needing to rely on brute force to either control or be controlled.
If it is a weapon, a gigantic fleet, or something that may be strong enough to not only push the threats to humanity away, but even create unity by force… she would be on her way to sit on the very chair she was terrified of ever taking. All, because it may very well be the only way to save her people.
Essentially, first choice would have her happily turning her world into a parallel of Star Trek’s United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. Second choice, would have her willingly turn humanity into the Terran Dominion of StarCraft out of desperation… with herself on the throne.
Treasure-hunting is not for the weak of heart.
WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER WILLING TO RISK, AND WHAT ARE THEY WILLING TO SACRIFICE?
She is familiar with killing, and has shot, stabbed, broken, and shredded numerous human beings that were pirates and paramilitaries, only to later turn to the private forces of Hacendados and even those of Aztlán itself during the civil war. Killing aliens during their expeditions against humanity has only been on par with the course, and has disturbingly made it easier in time. Killing pirates, criminals, and monsters of all kinds in order to get the Lucky Star will be old hat to her.
However, given the risks involved, Adela has let go of her family and her world, all for the hope of finding the Lucky Star. Her movement against the new owners of Aztlán has already waned too much, and with her choice, she has already risked and lost too much to back out now.
Should it be real, and be a genuine chance to save her world, Adela is afraid she might have to betray people for that power. Power to save her people, or possibly turn her into what she has always feared.
POWERS AND ABILITIES
Jack of All Trades –
She is a master of none, but when push comes to shove, sometimes it is better than a master of one. Her society has always been one to improvise, which is why she has learned as many things as possible so that, while unable to replace a professional in that field, being good enough to have it functioning.
She is not a cook, but she knows multiple dishes of her people in order to keep them fed and even happy to dishes close to home. She is no mechanic, but duck tape and soldering patches things for long enough to be fixed by someone that knows better. She is no programmer, but can learn how to crack programs in order to do whatever is needed. She is no vehicle operator, but she has learned to pilot and fire within tanks, wear WildCat Mobile Suits with efficiency, and even command starships on her own.
People come and go, and join and die in militaries in the middle of brutal wars. Therefore, while she is well-aware of needing one person for every job, and treasures whoever is able to specialize in any role, she is aware of the need of reservists for those skills. After all, an Aztlanian should be able to care for children, kill and field-dress armored deers, solder plating, fire guns, light fire to charcoal, cook tacos and tamales, crack software, flirt or insult people, pray to all saints, man farms, care for cattle, fight like animal, and love their family.
Specialization is for insects and witches.
Heavy Machine Gun, “El Juárez” –
This is a monster of a weapon. A .50 Cal weapon that is meant for stationary positions or armored vehicles, that she carries around and fires with a surprising strength and agility. It has been modified with a program to tilt itself towards strong heat signatures to assist with accuracy in combat, and she constantly wears an ammunition bandolier in order to continue feeding the weapon.
Against the hordes of arthropod ‘Tzizimime’, those rounds cause a chain reaction by turning the cannon fodder
Chillones
into confetti merely by their speed and force, which turns their carapaces into shrapnel to wound or even disable dozens of their companions with one single bullet each. Against the fanatics of the supernatural Pillar Empire, her weapon is able to quickly overwhelm their personal shields with focused fire, and bend or even shred the nanolaminate armor the
Brujo
may wear, until her enemy turns into swiss cheese. Even WildCat Mobile Suits are vulnerable against it, having insufficient plating to protect them forever from heavy firepower.
Due to its effectiveness in comparison to even rifles, Adela has made it her duty to use it for everyone, as it IS the most effective weapon against all sorts of enemies, especially as an anti-tank weapon, because it follows a basic principle of war: If brute force doesn’t work, you’re not using enough of it.
It also has a semi-nude HIMBO pin-up boy painted over its metal pouch, which gives her weapon its name. Adela is not shy about objectifying hot people.
Combat Experience –
Having faced against all three factions of the sector, she has gathered an ample array of the ways to wage war. Hiveminds with mass wave tactics, psionic ageless fanatics addicted to reputation and glory, and disconnected and greedy human beings forced to improvise and learn on the go. All those three have been their enemies, and she has learned how to fight each one.
She was taught how to shoot military-grade weapons by her grandparents in order to hunt the armored macrofauna of her world, to be then further instructed by the military on CQC as well as on an even bigger array of weaponry and vehicles. She can operate nearly any weapon and any vehicle, and has learned how to use many of them for many new tactics.
Her preferred way to engage enemies, given the enormous weapon she has chosen to use, is by riding a hover-bike, mounting the HMG on top of it, and perform hit-and-run attacks. Otherwise, she is just as capable as fighting on foot, and for the little height she has, she is
strong
. Strong enough to carry said weapon at all times during combat.
Be it against human or alien enemies, Adela has survived and even won against more powerful enemies through a combination of ferocity, combat ability, and intelligence.
Determination –
Above all, Adela is a woman that refuses to give up. She was born to a big family in poverty and has always done her best to try to pull them out of it, got stuck under a corrupt government that solely benefited people in power, was thrown to alien enemies that overwhelmed her people in numbers and technology, fought in a revolution only to see tyrants replaced by other tyrants, and was ultimately forced to wage guerrilla warfare against all factions in a desperate attempt to save people with everyone gunning for her.
And yet, she hasn’t given up.
She has suffered her downturns, depression, guilt, and everything any human would feel in such hopeless circumstances. And yet she always chooses to continue helping people, using whatever resources she has to continue fighting and assisting those that need it, and even stronger enemies get a string of insults and defiance even if she is overpowered.
To her family, to live has always been to struggle. Even the breath of life is purchased at birth only through gasping effort and pain. Having been in the middle of a three-front war with every single faction vying for their own interests, Adela has learned that the only way to survive and gain freedom, is to fight. Because she also learned, when you bow your head to a tyrant, you are not even guaranteeing your survival.
Her emotions fuel her, drive her towards that determination, which is how she manages to keep going. Her love for her family, her people, her home, and everything that took care for her, she is willing to fight like a wild animal for it.
